Bluesky

Bluesky is a decentralized social network built on the AT Protocol with a rapidly growing user base. Social Neuron connects to your Bluesky account so you can cross-post content, schedule posts, and manage your presence alongside your other platforms.

Supported Features

FeatureDescription
Text postsPublish posts up to 300 characters
Image postsAttach images with alt text
Link cardsShare URLs with rich preview cards
Cross-postingPublish to Bluesky alongside other platforms in one action
SchedulingQueue posts for future publishing
Profile syncDisplay your Bluesky handle and follower count in your dashboard

Bluesky's API is evolving as the platform grows. Social Neuron supports the current feature set and will add new capabilities (video, feeds, analytics) as they become available via the AT Protocol.

Content Best Practices

Post Style

Bluesky's culture leans toward authentic, conversational content. The platform's audience skews toward early adopters, journalists, developers, and creators who value substance over polish.

Content TypePerformanceNotes
Thoughtful takesHighOriginal perspectives do well
Conversational postsHighReply-worthy content gets distributed
Cross-posted corporate contentLowFeels out of place on Bluesky
Threads (reply chains)MediumWorks for longer content
Image postsMedium-HighPhotography and art perform well

Writing Tips

  • Write like you are talking to a smart friend, not an audience
  • Bluesky users value nuance -- binary hot takes are less effective here than on X
  • Skip the hashtags (Bluesky does not use hashtags for discovery)
  • Alt text on images is strongly valued by the community
  • Engage in replies -- Bluesky's algorithm surfaces active conversations

Best Posting Times

Bluesky's user base is still establishing patterns, but early data suggests:

DayBest Window (UTC)Notes
Monday-Friday13:00-17:00Afternoon engagement peaks
Tuesday-Thursday15:00-16:00Highest activity windows
Weekends10:00-14:00Casual browsing sessions

Because Bluesky is smaller than other platforms, individual posts have a longer shelf life. A good post can circulate for hours or even days, unlike X where the half-life is 30 minutes.

How to Connect

Bluesky uses App Passwords for third-party access, which is different from other platforms.

  1. Open your Social Neuron dashboard
  2. Go to Settings then Connected Accounts
  3. Click Connect Bluesky
  4. You will be prompted to enter your Bluesky handle (e.g., yourname.bsky.social)
  5. Create an App Password in Bluesky:
    • Open bsky.app/settings/app-passwords
    • Click Add App Password
    • Name it "Social Neuron"
    • Copy the generated password
  6. Paste the App Password into Social Neuron
  7. Your Bluesky account is now connected

App Passwords can only be viewed once when created. If you lose it, revoke the old one and create a new one. App Passwords have limited permissions -- they cannot change your account settings or password.

Content Tips

  1. Adapt your voice for the platform. Content that works on LinkedIn or X often feels off on Bluesky. The audience prefers genuine conversation over performative authority. Drop the "Here are 7 tips" format and write like a person.

  2. Always add alt text to images. The Bluesky community strongly values accessibility. Posts with descriptive alt text receive more engagement and positive attention. It is considered poor form to post images without alt text.

  3. Use Bluesky for cross-platform audience building. Many creators use Bluesky as a "second home" to diversify away from algorithm-dependent platforms. Post your best content here alongside your primary platforms.

  4. Engage in conversations. Bluesky's feed algorithms reward reply activity. Replying thoughtfully to other posts increases your visibility more than broadcasting alone.

  5. Take advantage of custom feeds. Bluesky allows users to create and subscribe to algorithmic feeds. Understanding which feeds your audience follows helps you tailor content for discovery.

Example Post Structure

Standard Post

Format: Text with optional image
Length: Under 300 characters

Something I've noticed after 6 months of content creation:

The posts I spend 5 minutes on outperform
the ones I spend 5 hours on.

Overthinking is the enemy of authenticity.
plain

Image Post

Format: Text + 1-2 images
Image: 1080x1080 or 1200x675

Text:
Just finished the Q1 content audit.

The data is clear: short-form video drives
discovery, but long-form builds loyalty.

Both matter. Neither is optional.

Alt text: "Bar chart showing content performance
by format. Short-form video leads in reach,
long-form articles lead in time-on-page
and return visits."

Cross-Post with Platform Adaptation

When cross-posting from X or LinkedIn, adapt for Bluesky:

Original (LinkedIn, 400 words):
Long authority post with numbered framework

Adapted (Bluesky, under 300 chars):
The core insight distilled into 1-2 sentences.
Conversational tone. No hashtags. No CTA.
Just the idea, cleanly stated.

How Social Neuron Helps with Bluesky

Social Neuron's cross-post adapter reformats content for Bluesky's community culture -- shorter, more conversational, with proper alt text for images. When you publish the same content to X and Bluesky simultaneously, the Bluesky version drops the hashtags, softens the promotional tone, and writes like a person talking to a smart friend rather than broadcasting to an audience.

The AI automatically generates descriptive alt text for every image posted to Bluesky, because the community strongly values accessibility. You can edit the alt text before publishing, but you never have to write it from scratch.

As Bluesky grows, the learning loop tracks what resonates with this early-adopter audience specifically. The engagement patterns on Bluesky are different from X -- nuanced takes outperform hot takes, and conversational posts outperform authority posts. Social Neuron captures these patterns from your account data and adjusts future content suggestions to match what works on this platform.
